Commitment to the community

We take our responsibility to the various communities in which we work very seriously. We follow a company-wide strategy of sustainability and energy efficiency.

But as a company with a philosophy of ‘think global, act local’, our facilities around the world also support local and regional initiatives in their own areas.

These are mainly in the fields of education, specifically science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and the environment.

In the communities in which we work, Perkins has always been a company of conscience and commitment.

It started with our founder, Frank Perkins. Within a few years of founding the company, he had started on a series of programmes around Peterborough, UK, aimed at improving the lives of his employees and supporting the local community.

Similar efforts now continue around the world. We support local initiatives and local projects, particularly in the fields of the environment and education.

As one of the world’s leading engineering companies, our focus is especially on the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths – encouraging the engineers of the future.

Our Commitment to the Community
Going the extra mile in the Perkins Great Eastern Run 2014. All over the world, Perkins employees are involved with their local communities in charities and fundraising efforts.

We tackle local projects on a global scale.

  • In Peterborough, UK, aside from our work with local schools to support their STEM activities, we actively support Anna’s Hope, a charity for children and young people with brain tumours; various other sports clubs, schools and charities. We also sponsor the annual Perkins Great Eastern Run, a half-marathon, fun run and wheelchair race which brings the community together and raises money for local charities.
  • In Stafford, UK, we work in partnership with the local wildlife trust to deliver Wild About Stafford, a community project which encourages people to discover the wetlands around the town. We also support local charities including Katharine House Hospice, which provides free care for people suffering from incurable illnesses.
  • In Wuxi, China, several local schools have been provided with books, stationery and writing materials thanks to donations from our employees. There have also been tree-planting projects around the area, and the facility has taken a lead in encouraging people to recycle and choose reusable materials such as chopsticks and mugs.
  • In Shanghai, China, our sales office has organised fundraising golf days in support of Heart 2 Heart, a charity which funds heart operations for life-limited children.
  • Employees in Curitiba, Brazil, have donated clothing, stationery and school equipment for underprivileged youngsters. They have also helped with a local scheme to encourage art activities among young hospital patients.
  • In the United States, our manufacturing facilities in Griffin and Texas play a key role in the local community, working with local schools to encourage STEM activities and hosting open days for employees’ families.
  • In Aurangabad, India, consultations on deciding priorities for supporting educational charities started months before the facility opened in late 2015.

These are only a few of our commitments around the world. They change all the time, but the principles remain the same – local people establishing the needs of local communities, and finding local solutions, with the backing of Perkins and our employees.

Our place in the community

There are two main strands to our corporate social responsibility (CSR). As a responsible manufacturing company, we take a close interest in environmental projects in the communities where we’re based. And, as an engine company with an eye to the future, we’re keen to support educational initiatives, particularly in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths.
